Friends of Wisconsin State Parks (FWSP)
Friends of Wisconsin State Parks (FWSP) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to the preservation, protection, promotion, and enhancement of Wisconsin's state parks, forests, trails, and recreation areas. Established in 1996, FWSP works in collaboration with the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources and over 60 local Friends Groups throughout the state.
Mission and Goals
FWSP's mission centers on four key objectives:
- Preserving: The organization supports various initiatives such as volunteer events to remove invasive species, clean campgrounds, plant trees, and build park infrastructure.
- Promoting: FWSP raises awareness about Wisconsin's natural resources through educational programs, newsletters, and social media. It also provides resources and workshops to local Friends Groups to enhance their effectiveness.
- Protecting: Advocacy for state park funding and policies is a significant part of FWSP's work, ensuring that park lands are maintained for future generations.
- Enhancing: The organization collaborates with local Friends Groups to provide grants for park improvements and educational programs, thereby enriching visitor experiences.
Activities and Support
FWSP engages in a variety of activities to fulfill its mission:
- Volunteer Coordination: Organizes thousands of volunteer hours annually for park clean-ups and maintenance.
- Fundraising: Raises funds to support local Friends Groups in purchasing equipment and materials for park enhancements.
- Event Sponsorship: Hosts events like Work*Play*Earth Day and a photography contest that encourages community involvement.
- Grant Programs: Provides financial support through grants for specific projects aimed at improving facilities and educational resources in state parks.
Community Impact
With over 17 million visitors to Wisconsin's state parks each year, FWSP plays a crucial role in enhancing the recreational experience while fostering stewardship among community members. Through its efforts, FWSP not only improves the physical environment of these natural spaces but also cultivates a sense of community and responsibility towards preserving Wisconsin's outdoor heritage.
